The brewing region of France is concentrated in the lowlands to the far north, in Flanders, Artois, and Picardy. Though less than twenty miles from the Belgian border, this region produces its own distinctive styles of beer. There are about twenty breweries in this region, and some use locally grown hops and barley.
Bière de garde is the most famous brew of northern France, but the region is also known for its bière de mars, pale to dark lagers, porters, Christmas beers, and wheat beers. One of the most classic examples of a domestically operated commercial brewery in the region is Theillier, which still uses 150-year-old equipment.
